Town Wear

Clothing is a second outfit, worn about town while your armour waits for the dungeon. A tailor cuts it from Cloth, which is found and never bought; each town sells a line of its own; and the rarest pieces need a Pattern. This is what there is to wear, what each piece takes, and a fitting room to try it all on.

In short

Two outfits
Your armour is your fight wear. Town wear is clothing, worn in slots of its own. You own both at once and never have to choose between them.
Where each is seen
In a dungeon you are always seen in your fight wear. In a town, at a house and while mining, chopping or fishing you are seen in your town wear, if you are wearing any.
Your choice
You can keep your fight wear on show everywhere instead. The switch is at the foot of the Wardrobe.
No numbers
Clothing carries no armour, no bonus and no durability. It is a look, and it stays on when you die.
Where clothes come from
A tailor cuts them from Cloth, and each town sells a line of its own to those who have given to it.
Colour
A garment is the colour of the cloth it was cut from, for good. Dye the cloth, not the garment.

Fifty ways to dress

Every outfit here can be worn: the showpieces cut from rare Patterns, each town's own line and the Pattern it keeps for its Luminaries, and what any tailor can make from a few lengths of cloth. Build any of them, or your own, in the Fitting Room below.

Fifty figures in town wear, each named: the Admiral in a purple coat braided in gold, the Jester in motley, the Bride in white, a citizen and a Luminary of each of the fourteen towns in that town's colour, and thirteen everyday outfits from a cook's apron to a mage's robe
Fifty outfits. The first nine are built around the rare Patterns. Then come the fourteen towns, two outfits each, in the town's own colour. The last thirteen are everyday tailoring.

The Fitting Room

Try anything on. Pick a cloth colour, then click a garment or drag it onto the figure or a slot. A garment takes the colour selected when you put it on, as it takes its cloth's colour in the game; a town's own piece always comes in that town's colour.

Wearing it

The Town side
The Character panel has a button in its heading that reads Battle or Town. It turns the left column of slots from your armour to your town wear and back, and the figure in the alcove turns with it.
The slots
7: headwear, top, overgarment, gloves, legwear, footwear, accessory. Your cloak is worn with both outfits.
The accessory slot
Kept for rare and special pieces. No tailor can make one and no town sells one; each comes from somewhere of its own, and its tooltip says where.
Putting it on
Drag a garment from your pack onto its slot, or right-click it and choose Equip. Picking a garment up turns the panel to its Town side for you.
An empty slot
Shows the plain shirt, trousers and boots every figure has underneath, never your armour.
In your hands
Nothing. Your weapon and shield are not drawn while you are seen in town wear. They are still equipped.
The Wardrobe
The shears button beside it opens the Wardrobe: every garment that can be cut, the line of the town you are standing in, and the switch for which outfit you are seen in.

Cloth and Silk

Cloth
A rare find on any monster, anywhere. The stronger the monster, the better the chance. No vendor sells it.
Silk
Rarer still, and only from the most dangerous monsters (Dangerous and above). It is never the cloth a garment is cut from: it is the trim and lining of the finer ones.
Colouring cloth
Cloth is found undyed. Drag a Dye Tub onto it to colour one length; the tub is used up. Dyed cloth can be dyed again until it is cut. Silk takes no dye.
One colour a garment
Every length that goes into a garment must be the same colour.
Keeping it
Cloth, Silk and Patterns can be traded, and Cloth and Silk go on the Misc tab of a Stockpile.

Cutting a garment

Where
In the Wardrobe, under Tailor. Choose the garment, choose which of your cloths to cut it from, and press Cut.
What it takes
The Tailoring shown for that garment, its Cloth, and its Silk if it has any. All of it must be in your pack.
It never fails
With the skill and the materials the cut is certain. Nothing is ever wasted.
One at a time
Each press of Cut makes one garment.
After it is cut
The garment keeps the colour of its cloth and the name of the tailor who made it. It cannot be dyed. It can be traded.

Everyday garments

Any tailor with the skill can cut these. Shown here in undyed cloth.

Patterns

What a Pattern is
A tailor's pattern for one garment that cannot be cut without it. Cutting the garment uses the Pattern up: one Pattern, one garment.
Rare Patterns
Found on monsters, very rarely, and each only in the dungeons listed for it below.
Town Patterns
Each town sells one of its own to those who have reached Luminary standing there, and will sell it again as often as you ask.
Colour
A Pattern garment takes the colour of its cloth like any other.

The towns' own lines

What a town sells
Four finished garments in the town's own colour, and its Pattern. They are on the Town Collector's counter and in the Wardrobe's Town tab while you stand in that town.
What it asks
Gold, and standing with that town. Standing is never spent: it only decides whether the town will sell to you.
The oath
A town's fourth piece carries its device and is sold only to those sworn to it.
Bound to you
A town's finished garments cannot be traded. Its Pattern, and the garment cut from it, can.

Every town's line

A Pattern row shows what cutting it takes as well as its price.
