Facets

A facet is a power you unlock once and then raise through 12 levels by using it: fire on the blade, a second strike from nowhere, a haul that spills over, a batch that finishes itself. This is what each one does, how you get your first, how one is bound and levelled, and where the Shards and Fragments it costs come from: monsters, and only monsters.

In short

What a facet is
A power you unlock once and then raise through 12 levels by using it. There are 8: Ember, Volt, Echo, Bastion, Mangle and Overload for fighting, Yield for gathering and Hallmark for crafting.
What it does
Each one is a chance: on a hit, a spell, a blow taken, a gathering swing or a craft, it may fire its effect. The chance rises with every level.
Where it lives
On your character, not on a weapon. A facet is bound to a weapon to use it, and losing that weapon costs you the binding only, never the level or the experience.
One at a time
Only one facet is active at once, and only the active one earns experience.
Two things to level
Experience fills the bar. Shards and Fragments pay for the level. You need both, and the level is taken by hand at the Facet Menu.
Where the materials are
On monsters, for every facet. Gathering and crafting fill the bars of Yield and Hallmark, but turn up no Shards or Fragments. The one exception is a gatherer's rare prize: a Geode, a Lost Satchel or a Message in a Bottle may have a Fragment inside.
The Facet Menu
Press F4, or right-click any Facet, Shard or Fragment in your pack and choose Facet Menu.

The Facet Menu

Everything about facets is done in one window, titled Weapon Facets. Press F4 to open and close it; the key can be changed under Hotkeys in Options. You can also right-click any Facet, Shard or Fragment in your pack and choose Facet Menu.

A backpack holding Shards and Fragments, with a right-click menu open on an Ember Fragment: Facet Menu, Smash into Shards, Smash All, Smash x, Split Stack, Drop to Ground
The other way in. This is a Fragment's menu, so it carries the three Smash choices as well.
The name plate at the top of the screen: under the character's name, an orange bar with a flame at one end and Lv 5 at the other
The bar under your name is your active facet's: its sign, how far its bar has filled and its level.
The Weapon Facets window: a Convert row, then eight tiles. Ember is lit and marked Active at level 5, Volt is level 3, Yield level 2 and Hallmark level 1; Echo, Bastion, Mangle and Overload are dim and marked Uncut
All eight at a glance. A lit tile is a facet you hold, with its level and a thin bar of experience; a dim one marked Uncut is still to be unlocked. The small arrow on Mangle means something can be done there now. Click a tile to open its card.

The 8 facets

The chance shown is at level 1 and at level 12; it climbs by the same amount each level. Every effect that is "per level" grows the same way.

FacetForFiresChance (level 1 to 12)What it does
EmberFightingWhen your weapon hits0.25% to 3%Deals an additional 30% of the strike's damage per level as fire damage.
VoltFightingWhen your weapon hits0.25% to 3%Stuns the monster for 3s and deals 20% of the strike's damage per level.
EchoFightingWhen your weapon hits0.25% to 3%3s later, strikes again for free at 40% of that strike's damage per level.
BastionFightingWhen a monster hits you0.25% to 3%Absorbs all incoming damage for 3s, +0.25s per level.
MangleFightingWhen your weapon hits0.125% to 1.5%Adds 2 extra strikes to the swing, each 40% of its damage per level.
OverloadFightingWhen a damaging spell lands0.25% to 3%Your damaging spells have a chance to overload — an additional 40% of the spell's damage per level, as raw arcane damage. While active, all your spells deal +1% damage per level.
YieldGatheringOn a gathering swing0.5% to 6%That swing brings extra material on top of its haul: 0.3 for every level of the facet, rounded up — 1 at level 1, 4 at level 12. It is added after everything else and is not held to the swing's cap.
HallmarkCraftingOn a craft attempt1% to 12%Finishes the next 5 attempts of what you are crafting per level at once (60 at level 12) — every attempt still paid for, rolled and gained, only the waiting skipped. Only a run with a count can proc: Craft All, Craft x, or the Crafting Bench's "Make x, then stop". While bound, 0.8% of the gear you craft per level comes out Well-Made, Superior or Mastercrafted: +5%/+10%/+15% better stats on gear, and as many more uses on a tool.
⚖️
A slow weapon is not short-changed. The chance for a weapon facet is quoted for a 2.5-second swing and scales with the bound weapon's own speed, so a halberd rolls higher per swing than a dagger and every weapon fires its facet about as often per minute. Overload scales the same way by a spell's cast time. Bastion, Yield and Hallmark do not scale.

What an active facet gives you on every swing

Flat weapon damage
While a combat facet is active on the weapon in your hand, that weapon deals +1 damage per facet level on a 2.5-second weapon, scaled by its speed: at level 12 that is +8 on a 1.75-second dagger and +18 on a 3.75-second halberd.
Overload
Also makes every damaging spell hit harder while it is active, with no proc needed.
Hallmark
Also gives everything you craft a standing chance to come out marked: Well-Made (+5%), Superior (+10%) and Mastercrafted (+15%). On gear the bonus is stats; on a tool it is uses.
A broken weapon
Carries no facet. Repair it and the facet is back.

Getting your first facet

The First Facet quest
Once per character, pick any facet you do not hold and hand in three stacks of what its craft is made of. It is unlocked at level 1 outright, with nothing else to pay.
The Wanderer's Exchange
Sells a whole Facet of any kind, in every town, for 10 Merchant Tokens or 10 Dungeoneer Tokens. Facets do not drop from anything.
Unlocking a bought Facet
At the Facet Menu, for the Facet itself, 2 of its Shards and 1 of its Fragments. The Facet is used up; a second one of a kind you already own does nothing.

What the First Facet quest asks for

Three hand-ins, in order. Things you were given at character creation do not count toward them.

The Mangle card, marked Uncut: To unlock, Mangle Facet held, 2 shards with 6 held, 1 fragment with 1 held, and an Unlock button
A bought Facet, ready to unlock. The card lists the three things it takes and how many of each you are holding. Green means you have enough; the button lights when all three are.

Activating a facet

A combat facet
Binds to the weapon you have equipped when you press Activate. It works only while that exact weapon is in your hand.
Putting the weapon away
Keeps the binding: it can sit in your pack, or in a bag in your pack, between fights.
Fighting bare-handed
Your punches borrow the facet — Ember, Volt, Echo and Mangle — while the weapon it is bound to is in your pack, or in your hand doing nothing (an instrument out, a spell being cast). The chance is matched to a punch's speed, so it fires no more often a minute than on the weapon, and the weapon's flat damage stays with the weapon. Not with an Inscribed Spellbook in your hand, and never from a broken weapon.
Losing the weapon
Ends the binding: selling it, banking it, trading it or losing it on death. Your level and experience are untouched; bind the facet to another weapon.
Yield and Hallmark
Bind to nothing. They are simply on or off.
Changing by hand
Free, but you must wait 2 minutes between changes.
Changing automatically
Start gathering and Yield switches on; start crafting and Hallmark does; start a fight and your default combat facet binds to the weapon in your hand. None of these costs the wait. Choose the default with Set Default on a combat facet's card.
The Ember card, marked Active at level 5: proc 1.25%, power +150%, an experience bar at 36,000 of 175,000, and the price of level 6 as 18 shards with 17 held in red and 3 fragments with 4 held. Level Up is greyed out and the Default button is ticked
The active facet. Proc is its chance on the weapon it is bound to, and Power what it does when it fires. Below the bar is the price of the next level: one Shard short here, shown in red, so Level Up is greyed out even if the bar were full. Default is ticked: this is the facet a fight binds by itself.

Earning experience

Combat facets
Each kill pays the monster's base gold as facet experience: 1 gold, 1 experience. It goes to the facet active on the weapon you are holding.
Yield
Each gathering swing pays 3 experience per unit hauled at the lowest tier of ore, wood or fish, and one more 3 for every tier above it. Mining, Lumberjacking and Fishing all count.
Hallmark
Each craft attempt pays 40 experience at the lowest material tier and one more 40 for every tier above it. It is counted per attempt, never per unit of material.
A full bar
Never levels the facet by itself. Experience keeps banking past a level you cannot yet pay for, so nothing earned offline is wasted.
Virtue Surge
The Dungeon Boon of that name adds to facet experience while it runs.

The ladder

Experience is the running total needed to reach the level. The Shards and Fragments are paid to take it, and must be the facet's own kind. From level 1 to 12 is 283 Shards and 89 Fragments.

⏳
The first eight levels are about a tenth of the whole ladder. Levels 9 to 12 are the rest: a maxed facet is the longest single climb in the game.
The Volt card at level 3 with a full experience bar reading 55,000 of 55,000, the price of level 4 as 10 shards with 14 held and 2 fragments with 2 held, and Level Up, Activate and Set Default buttons
Ready to level. The bar is full and both materials are in the pack, so Level Up is lit. Nothing happens until you press it.

Where Shards and Fragments come from

Monsters drop them, and a gatherer's rare prize may hold a Fragment. Either way it is one of the 8 kinds, picked evenly, so no facet is rarer than another, and that includes Yield's and Hallmark's.

⛏️
A gathering swing or a craft attempt drops no facet materials by itself. A miner, lumberjack or angler finds no Shards among the spoil, and nothing turns up on the bench. What gathering does turn up, rarely, is a Geode, a Lost Satchel or a Message in a Bottle, and each of those has a 50% chance of a Fragment on top of its usual prize. Yield and Hallmark still earn their experience from their own work; the rest of the Shards and Fragments for their levels come from kills, from other players, from Convert, or from a Facet Crate.

What moves those odds

Tougher monsters
A kill's chance rises 10% for every tier of the monster above the lowest.
Nothing else
Every monster can drop every kind, in any dungeon or out of one. No facet belongs to a place.

Trading one material for another

Convert
The row at the top of the Facet Menu: 5 Shards of one facet for 1 Shard of any other, and the same 5 to 1 for Fragments.
Smash
Right-click a Fragment and break it into 3 Shards of the same facet. Nothing turns Shards back into a Fragment, and the last levels want Fragments badly.
Other players
Whole Facets, Shards and Fragments can all be traded and sold.

The Facet Crate

Sold at the Commission Board's Rewards store for 100 Commission Points. Right-click to open it. The band decides how much you get; which facet it is for is an even pick across all 8.
